Keep yourself safe
Friends stick together
When out at night try to have a friend walk with you, or walk in a group. Stick to well lit areas, or better still use a registered taxi!
If you are walking alone, if possible always walk facing the oncoming traffic – and be aware of your surroundings, remove headphones and walk with purpose.
If you think somebody is following you switch directions or cross the street. If the person continues to follow you, move quickly toward an open store or restaurant or lighted house. Do not be afraid to yell for help or phone the police 999.
Alcohol effects everyone’s judgment, stay with friends and enjoy your night out but don’t over do it.
Keep your valuables safe
If you are carrying valuables be discreet – Do not carry your wallets or mobile phone in your back pocket or leave them on a table.
Did you know you can register your electronic gadgets for free on Register your mobile at www.immobilise.com and this increases your chances of getting it back if it’s lost or stolen.
Have your bags where you can see them. When in a public place, such as a bar or restaurant, try to make sure a handle or strap is secured on a hook or under a chair leg, so that the bag can’t easily be taken away.
Think about keeping your valuables in separate places so if you lose your bag you haven’t lost everything.
If people push or bump into you CHECK YOUR BAG IMMEDIATELY.
DO NOT leave your handbag on a shopping trolley or pushchair – HOLD ONTO IT.
